Utah Festival's mission statement proclaims that we "Bring people together to share ennobling artistic experiences." Few works embody this principle more than LES MISÉRABLES. We vow to lift you from "misérables" to "nobilité" with our production of this landmark operatic work. You may have seen wonderful productions of LES MISÉRABLES already, but I promise you will never have heard it like this! We are investing our finest vocal and instrumental resources to imbue the score with the majesty a live performance deserves!
I had previously anticipated portraying the role of my hero Jean Valjean. However, we have been presented with an extraordinary opportunity to have a world-class performer step into the role. His name is Patrick Miller. He is the winner of a Grammy Award and has performed with numerous companies including the MET and Lyric Opera of Chicago. His extensive experience will bring a depth and passion to Valjean that will enthrall us all. This will enable me to focus my energies on the larger picture of the leadership, management and goals of the company, including the completion of the Utah Theatre. I look forward to mingling with you in the audience this summer, and plan to be back on stage in the near future.
At the age of 5, sitting next to my beloved maternal grandmother in the Ellen Eccles Theatre, I first heard the spectacular voice of Mario Lanza in THE STUDENT PRINCE. At that moment I knew I must venture forth to present that kind of sound to the world. We will do just that in a work so beloved to two of our dearest patrons that we are dedicating this glorious production of THE STUDENT PRINCE to Frances and Thomas S. Monson. In my esteem it is the greatest operetta of all time.
I have been afforded many tender mercies in my professional life, and one of the greatest was to be the first to re-create the role of Anatol in Samuel Barber's monumental VANESSA after the premiere in 1958. It became then, and remains today, the greatest American opera. It is so beloved to me that we named our first daughter after it. What a personal thrill for me to give this unique work to you.
OKLAHOMA! swung wide the door to the great American Musical Theatre in 1943. It raised the bar in every aspect of production: story-telling, drama, choreography, vocalism and orchestration. It changed everything and we never looked back. Broadway became a world-class art! Utah Festival will afford all the grand elements of the original production and you'll never see such a rich production anywhere in the world today.
What do Utah Festival's four offerings have in common? They are the pinnacle of each of their genres: Grand Opera, Operetta, American Opera and American Musical Theatre. Don't miss any one of them. We're also presenting wonderful concerts and classes to enhance your Festival experience. I'll see you there!
