SUZAN HANSON

DIRECTOR, THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO
MARIA CALLAS, MASTER CLASS

A multi-faceted artist, Suzan’s career spans work in Opera, Music Theater, Theater and Concert. Thrilled to return to UFOMT, Suzan recently was hailed as “Best Opera Diva” by the LA Weekly (”When Hanson opens her mouth, her characters’ hopes, fears, desires and secret thoughts come pouring out in a mellifluous rush of unbridled emotions that is amplified further by Hanson’s persuasive acting and intensity.”) Performances of Poulenc’s La voix humaine (“Hanson’s singing was fresh and forceful…blazing dramatic fervor…” San Francisco Chronicle) added another role to her impressive repertoire of operatic heroines- a role Suzan reprised to great acclaim for Long Beach Opera (“With her flawless diction, and vocal nuance true to every dramatic utterance, Hanson produces a raw immediacy that adds a remarkable authenticity.”  LA Times)

Other operatic heroines include Cherubini’s Medea (in Suzan’s new adaptation), Giovanna d’Arco, Cio-Cio San, Rosalinda, Tatiana, Pat Nixon, Floyd’s Susannah, Olympia-Antonia-Giulietta-Stella, Violetta, Magda, Lady Macbeth, Fiordiligi, Donna Anna, Countess Almaviva, Marilyn Klinghoffer. Appearing with companies such as Arena di Verona, Arizona Opera, Carnegie Hall, Chicago Opera Theater, Edinburgh International Festival, Hong Kong Festival, Long Beach Opera, Maggio Musicale (Florence), New Israeli Opera, New York City Opera, Pittsburgh Opera Theater, Sacramento Opera, San Francisco Opera, Teatro Camões (Lisbon), and Virginia Opera

Frequently sought for new works, Suzan has originated many roles, including Colleen (Fallujah- Tobin Stokes ), Eurydice (Orpheus X – Rinde Eckert), Hanako (Sound of a Voice – Phillip Glass/ David Henry Wang), Raven 1 (White Raven – Phillip Glass/Robert Wilson), Marie (Tale of the Nutcracker – Bohmler/Helfgot), Madeline (Fall of the House of Usher – Glass/Yorinks), Indian Maiden (Coyote Tales – Mollicone/Harnick), Cheerleader (Hydrogen Jukebox – Glass/Alan Ginsberg), and Alma Mahler (Doll – Korie/Frankel).

Suzan’s concert repertoire includes Verdi’s Requiem, Strauss’ Four Last Songs, Orff’s Carmina Burana, Poulenc’s Gloria, Britten’s Les Illuminations. Having appeared with Detroit Symphony, American Composer’s Orchestra, and Miami Symphony, among others.

On the Musical Theater and Theatrical stages, Suzan’s numerous roles include Lily (The Secret Garden), The Actress (Enter the Guardsman – Bohmler), Maria (Wintertime). She has performed with San Jose Rep, Globe Theaters, American Repertory Theater, Court Theatre, and Denver Center Theater.

Suzan also played Sharon on the National Tour of Master Class, opposite Fate Dunaway’s Maria Callas.

Recordings: The Tender Land (Koch), Coyote Tales (Newport Classics)…
